Electronic waste, or e-waste, refers to electronic products that are no longer usable, including TVs, cell phones and computers. With the constant innovation and breakthroughs in technology, the amount of electronic waste is soaring, and according to some estimation, 20 to 50 million tons of e-waste is generated globally each year.  

The high speed of growth in the electronic industry is the first and dominant reason for the boom of e-waste. Meanwhile, with the increasingly improved living standard, people are finding no difficulties in affording the latest electronic products. Nonetheless, the downside of it can not be overlooked. The fast growing industry makes it possible that more and more electronic products are wasted and thrown away before fully used. Besides, if the old products are not retrieved or recycled, the harmful chemicals and hazardous substances in them will pollute the environment seriously.  

To solve the problem, joint efforts should be made on both sides of the government and the public. Firstly, the government should establish laws and regulations for the disposal and recycling programs of e-waste. Secondly, consumers should also reduce e-waste by building up their environmental and economical consciousness.
