1. discourage /dɪsˈkʌrɪdʒ/

discourage是动词,常见的意思为“使…灰心或者丧失信心”,第二个意思是“劝阻,阻止”。

Misfortune like that is enough to discourage anybody.

像那样的不幸足以使任何人灰心。

The authorities have put tanks on the streets to discourage any protest.

当局调动坦克上街去阻止抗议活动。

Low hedges round lawns discourage people from walking on the grass.

草坪四周的矮树篱阻拦人们踏上草地。

2. discourse /ˈdɪskɔːs/

discourse是名词,指比较长或者较为严肃的“论文,演讲”,另一个意思指语言上的”话语,语篇“。

Gates responds with a lengthy discourse on deployment strategy.

盖茨以一篇有关部署策略的鸿篇大论予以回应。

He was hoping for some lively political discourse at the meeting.

他希望在会上听到些生动的政治演讲。

The Centre has a strong record of research in discourse analysis.

3. discreet /dɪˈskriːt/

discreet是形容词,意为”谨慎的,慎重的”。

The family made discreet enquiries about his background.

He assured her that he would be discreet.

4. discrepancy /dɪsˈkrepənsi/

discrepancy是名词,意为“差异,不一致”。

Police found discrepancies in the two men’s reports.

5. discrete /dɪˈskriːt/

discrete是形容词,意为“分离的,个别的”。

6. discretion /dɪˈskreʃn/

discretion名词,有两个意思,第一指”谨慎,慎重”,第二个意思是“决定权,处理权”,这个意思的英文解释为 the freedom or power to decide what should be done in a particular situation。

7. discriminate /dɪˈskrɪmɪneɪt/

8. disguise /dɪsˈɡaɪz/

Their healthy image disguises the fact that they are highly processed foods.

9. disgust /dɪsˈɡʌst/

disgust作名词和动词都可以,意为“厌恶,反感”,作名词时后面常用介词at/with,作动词时则为及物动词。

She expressed her disgust at the programme by writing a letter of complaint.

她写了封投诉信,表示对这个节目的反感。

A look of disgust came over his face.

他脸上显出厌恶的表情。

The level of violence in the film really disgusted me.

10. dismay /dɪsˈmeɪ/

dismay作名词,意为“惊愕,沮丧”,英文释义为a feeling of unhappiness and disappointment。dismay也可作动词,意为“使…惊愕,沮丧”。

Aid workers were said to have been filled with dismay by the appalling conditions that the refugees were living in.

据说援助人员看到难民所处的恶劣生活环境时都感到非常沮丧。

The committee was dismayed by what it had been told. [be VERB-ed]
