1、preposition /ˌprepəˈzɪʃn/

preposition是名词，指语法上的“介词”，pre-是前缀，表示”在…前”，position意为“位置，姿势”，因此介词又被称为“前置词”。

There is nothing in the rules of grammar to suggest that ending a sentence with a preposition is wrong.

语法规则中并没有规定句子以介词结尾是错误的。

2、prescribe /prɪˈskraɪb/

prescribe是动词，它有两个意思，第一意为“给…开药，开处方”，此时用双宾语结构，第二意为“规定，指定”。

If these don’t work I may have to prescribe you something stronger.

如果这些药无效，我也许得给你开一些药效更强的。

The drug is often prescribed for ulcers.

这种药通常是开来治疗溃疡的。

Penalties for not paying taxes are prescribed by law.

法律上规定了不缴税的惩罚措施。

3、prescription /prɪˈskrɪpʃn/

prescription是prescribe的名词形式，指医生开的“处方，药方”或者处方上开的“药“。

These drugs are only available on prescription.

这些药只能凭处方购买。

I've got to pick up my prescription from the chemist's.

我得到药房取药。

4、preserve /prɪˈzɜːv/

preserve是动词，意为“保存，维护，保养”，通常指保持事物原来的样子。

We will do everything to preserve peace.

我们会尽全力维持和平。

We must encourage the planting of new trees and preserve our existing woodlands.

我们必须鼓励栽种新树木，同时也要保护现有的林地。

We want to preserve the character of the town while improving the facilities.

我们想在改善市镇设施的同时保存其特色。

5、preside /prɪˈzaɪd/

preside是不及物动词，意为“主持”会议或者“负责，掌管”，后面接宾语必须加上介词at或者over。

They asked if I would preside at the committee meeting.

他们问我是否会主持委员会会议。

Judge Langdale is to preside over the official enquiry into the case.

兰代尔法官将主持这个案子的正式调查。

This government has presided over some of the most significant changes in education this century.

6、press /pres/

press作名词和动词都可以，意思较多，但是大致分为两类。

第一类，与“新闻”相关，

① the press 指“报刊杂志，新闻报道，新闻工作者，记者，新闻界”，需要根据语境选择具体的意思。

The incident has been widely reported in the press.

报刊大幅报道了此事。

To judge from the press, the concert was a great success.

从新闻报道来看，这次音乐会非常成功。

The press is always interested in the private lives of famous people.

新闻界对于知名人士的私生活总是很感兴趣。

The press are in the outer office, waiting for a statement.

记者们在办公室外间等着声明的发表。

② 指“新闻舆论，媒体评论”。

The government's policy on mental health care is getting an increasingly bad press.

政府在心理保健方面的政策受到舆论界越来越强烈的批评。

Our recycling policy is getting a good press.

我们的回收利用政策逐渐获得新闻界的好评。

③ 指“印刷，印刷机”或者“出版社”。

These prices are correct at the time of going to press.

① 意为“按，压，”，作名词和动词都可以。

There was no-one at the reception desk, so he pressed a bell for service.

要启动机器，按一下这个按钮就可以了。

② 意为“敦促，催促”或者“坚持，反复强调”。

The committee pressed him to reveal more information.

委员会敦促他透露更多资讯。

Mr King seems certain to be pressed for further details.

看来人们一定会竭力要求金先生提供进一步的细节。

I don't want to press the point, but you do owe me $200.

7、prestige /preˈstiːʒ/

prestige是不可数名词，意为“威信，声望”。

This little-known British firm has now gained considerable prestige.

这家名不见经传的英国公司如今已经声名鹊起。

He experienced a tremendous increase in prestige following his victory.

胜利以后, 他的声望大增。

8、presumably /prɪˈzjuːməbli/

presumably是副词，意为“据推测，可能”。

Presumably he just forgot to send the letter.

他可能是忘了寄信。

It was not yet ten o'clock, so presumably the boys were still at the pub.

当时还不到十点, 所以男孩们大概还在酒吧。

9、presume /prɪˈzjuːm/

presume是动词，意为“假定，假设”，有时也翻译成“认为，相信”。注意例句中的常用搭配。

I presume that they're not coming, since they haven't replied to the invitation.

The two men were presumed dead when the wreck of their boat was found.

10、pretend /prɪˈtend/

pretend是动词，意为“假装，装作”，也可指“自称，自以为”。

He pretended that he didn't mind, but I knew that he did.

他假装不在乎，但我知道他很介意。

Sometimes the boy pretended to be asleep.

有时这个男孩会假装睡着了。

We do not pretend that the past six years have been without problems for us.

我们并不自夸在过去的6年中没有遇到任何问题。
