二、阅读理解(11-30)

A national survey showed that many of America' s public school teachers spend their own time expanding the knowledge and skills.

Professional training is a way of life for many teachers. Some even go to summer schools to learn new skills and keep up with advances in technology.

The average teacher has 25 years of classroom experience and more than half hold a master' s degree. Nearly 23 percent began full-time teaching within the past five years. This statistic should cause some concerns because it means a large number of teachers are reaching the retirement age. If this trend is not recognized, at some point this will result in an experience gap.

With salaries based on fewer hours and no overtime, the complaints of the teachers become more understandable. Many outsiders feel that the long summer vacations justify lower pay scales, but in reality, many teachers spend a good part of their vacation honing their skills for the upcoming year, Facing a classroom unprepared is tougher on the teacher than on students.

Even with all of these, three fifths of teachers (60 percent) said they would become teachers again. However, there were many who said they would not choose teaching as a career if they could start over again.

For the first time, the survey sought the reasons for teachers leaving the profession. The most often cited reason (37 percent )for abandoning their training and professional experience was low salaries. Minority teachers (50 percent), male teachers(43 percent),and teachers under 30 (47 percent) were most likely to claim low pay as the reason they will not stay in teaching.

C. They are asked to keep up with advanced technology.

D. They must go to summer school to learn new skills.

12.The concern caused by the statistic is that__________.

A. there is a danger for experience gap

B. 23 percent of teachers lack experience

C. more than half of the teachers will retire soon

D. there are more experienced teachers than the inexperienced ones

13.The underlined word "honing" in the 3rd paragraph is closest in meaning to__________.

A. practicing

B. preparing

C. improving

D. learning

14.Which of the following is most likely the reason that teachers would give up their job?

A. Lack of experience.

B. No overtime work.

C. Summer school for learning.

D. The low salary.

15.Which of the following may justify the teachers' lower salary scales according to the outsiders?

A. Long summer vacations.

B. Easier work.

C. Lower academic degree.

D. Less work stress.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change.

Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while--then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship where it left off and are delighted.

This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality ( 好客 ) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don' t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

16.The writer of this passage must be __________.

A. an American

B. a Chinese

C. a professor

D. a student

17.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.

C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.

D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

18.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be__________.

A. warmly welcomed at the airport

B. offered a ride to his home

C. treated hospitably at his home

D. treated to dinner in a restaurant

19.The underlined words "generous with our time" in Paragraph 3 probably mean __________.

A. strict with time

B. serious with time

C. careful with time

D. willing to spend time

20.A suitable title for this passage would probably be "__________ ".

A. Friendships between Chinese

B. Friendships between Americans

C. Americans' hospitality

D. Americans' and Chinese's views of friendships

Imagine you are Alice, stepping through the looking glass. Suddenly everything is reversed. Doorknobs(球形门把手) are on the wrong side of doors. The gearshift in your car is in the wrong place.

Twenty-five million Americans wake up every day in just such an awkward situation. They are the one in ten of us who are left-handed and face the world designed for the right-handed majority.

Why we are left- or right-handed remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of science. We know that nearly two out of three lefties are male and that left-handedness runs in families. According to one study, almost half the offspring of two left-handed parents will be left-handed. The Scots-lrish family Kerr(from the Gaelic word for "left" ) produced so many left-handers that in 1470 the family built its castle' s spiral stairways with a reverse twist to favor left-handed swordsmen.

On the other hand, heredity alone cannot explain lefties. At least 84 percent of them are born of two right-handed parents. And in 12 percent of genetically identical twins, one will be right-handed, the other left.

Perhaps the greatest puzzle of all is not why some people are left-handed, but rather why so few are. So, scientists are trying to discover the truth of the matter, and they are beginning to gain insight into many ways left-handed differ from right-handed by considering how their brains work.

21.How many of the Americans are left-handers?

A. 10%.

B. 12%.

C. 50%.

D. 80%.

22.Among the left-handers __________.

A. few are men

B. most of them are women

C. half of them are men

D. two thirds are men

23.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Almost half of the children of two left-handed parents will be left-handed.

B. At least 84 percent of left-handers are born of two right-handed parents.

C. One in ten of Americans are left-handed.

D. In the majority of genetically identical twins, one will be right-handed, the other left.

24.In the third paragraph, the word "offspring" means__________.

A. relatives

B. sons

C. daughters

D. children

25.The reason why so few are left-handed__________.

A. has nothing to do with heredity

B. remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of science

C. has little to do with the working of their brains

D. is that left-handers are mainly twins
