2.*restrain [rɪ'streɪn]

vt. 阻止，制止;遏制

You should try to restrain your ambitions and be more realistic.

你应该尽量控制自己的野心，更现实一些。

Shame may restrain what law does not prohibit.

restraint n. 克制，限制

During the recession, the government opted for a policy of wage restraint rather than a reduction in public investment.

The government should act to curb tax evasion.
